MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

Welcome to the Division of Surgical Oncology

Our Surgical Oncologist are an integral part of the clinical, basic research, and clinical research activities of the Massey Cancer Center, one of only 67 NCI-designated cancer centers in the country.

Our surgeons admit over 450 patients per year and perform approximately 1,300 surgical procedures yearly, plus more than 200 oncologic procedures at the affiliated McGuire Veterans' Administration Hospital. Care of patients with cancer at the VCU Medical Center is focused in the Massey Cancer Center, with a heavy emphasis on multi-disciplinary care for most patients.

Prior to a patient’s appointment, our surgeons work together with a team of specialists from many different disciplines in the area’s largest and most comprehensive multidisciplinary teams. Each team consists of medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, genetic counselors, clinical research nurses, physical therapists and social workers, among others, who come together to customize each individual patient’s course of treatment. This level of teamwork and communication is unparalleled and provides the highest-quality, personalized care – all culminating into better outcomes for patients.

Our surgeons participate in multidisciplinary team conferences for the following disease types:
