RESIDENCY
PROGRAMS |PLASTIC & RECONSTRUCTIVE
SURGERY
If you are a
prospective resident, interviewee,
or are considering a career in plastic
surgery, welcome to the VCU Department
of Surgery. We provide
a full spectrum of medical and surgical
specialties devoted to patient care,
education, and research.
OVERVIEW
The Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Division provides training in cosmetic
(aesthetic) surgery as well as reconstructive and hand surgery. We continue
to provide a comprehensive experience
in cosmetic surgery with laser surgery
where indicated.
In this program, we
work very closely with dermatologists,
head and neck surgeons, orthopedists,
surgical oncologists and other specialties.
A significant part of
our case schedule is utilized for birth
defects (craniofacial, maxillofacial,
cleft lip and palate, soft tissue and
skin tumors) and other pediatric plastic
surgery. There is no shortage of flaps
and microsurgery for post-surgical and
trauma reconstruction (post-mastectomy
breast reconstruction, head and neck
defects, hand surgery, extremity salvage
and replantation). The team approach
to wound management is also emphasized.
Residency rotations average three months
on each rotation per year.
