APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS | ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

All applications and other supporting material for the residency program must be submitted using the ERAS system.

The deadline for receipt of applications is October 31, 2008.

The following information is required:
Completed Application
Three (3) letters of recommendation from U.S. or Canadian physicians, including the Chair of Surgery or designee. IMG's must have letters of recommendation which clearly document U.S. or Canadian clinical experience
Medical school transcript
Dean's Letter
Personal statement
Results of USMLE or COMPLEX
ECFMG certificate (IMG applicants)


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants are expected to display commitment to a career in surgery, strong analytical ability, good judgment, proven academic skill and be of sound moral character.

USMLE
In order to be ranked in the NRMP, all residents must have passed Step 1 and Step 2 of USMLE or equivalent prior to January 31, 2009.

Minimum Board Score Requirement
There is _no_ minimum board score requirement. ECFMG certification is required before you will be accepted into the program, however, an interview can be granted without a certificate.

Visa Requirement
Only J-1 visas are accepted at VCUHS. All applicants must have sufficient written and spoken english language skills in order to deliver safe and effective patient care.

4 Years Graduation / 4 Years Direct Patient Care
All applicants must be within four years of graduation from medical/dental school or have four years direct patient care activity (either independent or ACGME, AOA, or ADA accredited residency).

Minimum of 3 Months Patient Care in US/Canada
Non-clinical graduate work in the US or Canada does not meet this requirement. All applicants must have a minimum of three months of US or Canadian direct patient care activity. For US and Canadian Medical and Dental students, their clinical rotations during medical or dental school will meet this requirement.

Externships Meet Requirement
Externships of direct patient care will meet this requirement, observerships and research fellowships do not qualify. Please note that observorships and externships are not available in the Department of Surgery at VCUHS.
