RESIDENCY
PROGRAMS | GENERAL
SURGERY
 The curriculum in surgery
is comprehensive to include didactic,
research, and clinical training and
is highly interactive among residents,
faculty and administration.
The program
graduates caring physicians who are
highly competent technicians fully versed
in the science, which subtends surgical
practice. The resources of the department
include not only our faculty and extensive
clinical environments but also teaching
laboratories, research facilities and
advanced computer facilities.

 The clinical training
program is a "hands-on" experience. Residents
participate in the operating room beginning
in their internship year. All operative
cases are supervised by attending staff
and rotations in the Intensive Care Unit
begin in the first year.
Senior residents
participate in the education of junior
residents. Weekly divisional conferences are led by senior residents who discuss
interesting cases and share recent
literature on the topic.
Additionally,
there is a weekly teaching conference for all residents (taught by faculty)
to cover basic science and clinical surgical
topics.
The Dept. of Surgery
is approved by the Residency Review Committee
to train 41 general surgery residents
(not including fellows). We graduate
five categorical residents each year.
Preliminary residency positions, one
or two clinical years, are available
to those interested in other surgical
or medical specialties who desire this
training.
CLINICAL ROTATIONS:
 Clinical rotations include:
General and trauma, surgical oncology,
cardiothoracic, urology, vascular,
transplant, plastic, neurosurgery, pediatric
surgery, orthopaedics, burn surgery,
critical care, and community surgery.
The
McGuire Veterans Administration Medical
Center is an
integrated institution providing
rotations in general surgery, vascular surgery, and
cardiothoracic surgery.
In addition,
The Department of Surgery has affiliations
with several community hospitals
in Richmond, for example St.
Mary’s Hospital and Chippenham
Medical Center.
Community rotations
are offered at the PGY-4 levels.
