TEACHING CONFERENCES


Divisional Conferences
DIVISIONAL JOURNAL CLUB

In addition to the departmental conferences, each division has its own teaching conference/s which residents are expected to attend the conferences while rotating on these services. The following is a list describing each of these conferences.

Surgical Oncology 7:30-8:30 Tuesday morning: Dr. Harry Bear, Chair of Surgical Oncology, facilitates.Residents and fellow present cases and management of the patient is discussed

Breast Conference 8:30-9:30 Tuesday morning: Dr. Huan Vu, Surgical Oncology, facilitates. Multidisciplinary conference in which all patients seen in the breast clinic are discussed with mammography and pathology.

Tumor Board MCVH Every other Tuesday 3:30 -4:30- Dr. Harry Bear, Chair of Surgicalfacilitates. Residents from surgery, surgical specialties and medicine present cases on a multidisciplinary fashion.

Gastrointestinal Tumor Center 1:30-2:00 Thursday afternoon: Dr. Brian Kaplan, Surgical Oncology facilitates. Multidisciplinary conference in which all patients seen in the busy GI oncology clinic are discussed with imaging and pathology.

Vascular Conference 9:30-11:00 Thursday Morning: Dr. Mark Levy, Chair of Vascular Surgery facilitates. Multidisciplinary conference with radiology in which all preoperative cases are discussed. Residents and faculty from the Vascular services of both VCU and VAMC participate.

General Surgery Conference 7:30-9:00 Tuesday morning : Dr. James Maher, Chair of General Surgery facilitates. Residents present cases and management of patients is discussed. Residents also present complications and deaths at this conference.

VAMC General Surgery Service and D&C, 7:30-9:00 Friday morning: Dr. Thomas Miller, Chief of Surgical Services facilitates. Residents present cases and management of the patients is discussed. Death and Complications are also discussed during this conference.

Trauma Conference 12:00-1:00 Tuesday: Dr. Rao Ivatury, Chair of Trauma/Critical Care facilitates.Residents and fellows present trauma cases and management of critically ill patients in the STICU.

Transplant Teaching Conference 12:00-2:00 Thursday: Dr. Marc Posner, Chair of Transplant Surgery facilitates. Residents and the fellow present transplant cases and management is discussed. Once monthly the service has D&C conference, once monthly there is Transplant Journal Club, and occasionally invited speakers.

Tumor Board VAMC-3:30- 4:30 Wednesday: Dr. Walter Lawrence, Professor Emeritus, Surgical Oncology facilitates. Residents from surgery, surgical specialties and medicine present cases in a multidisciplinary fashion.

GI/Radiology/Surgery Conference-MCVH 4:30-:600 Dr. Brian Kaplan, Surgical Oncology facilitates. Residents who are rotating on endoscopy present an interesting case weekly to residents, fellows, and attendings from the Surgical Oncology,General Surgery and Endoscopy. This conference highlights system based practice as the resident is able to focus on how the patient fits into the greater context of the health care system

VAMC GI/Radiology/Surgery Conference 8:00-9:30 . Dr Walter Lawrence and GI attendings facilitate.Residents rotating at the VAMC present an interesting case weekly to residents, fellows, and attendings from the previously mentioned departments. This conference highlights system based practice as the resident is able to focus on how the patient fits into the greater context of the health care system.

Divisional Journal Club

The surgical oncology, vascular, transplant, and trauma services have their own journal clubs focusing on current literature which meet once a month.

Residents assigned to these services are required to attend the divisional journal club. They are responsible for reviewing articles from current surgical journals and leading the discussions at journal club.

The form below is to aid in the evaluation of the article(s) in order to provide a critical assessment.
