General Surgery Curriculum 2006 - 2007

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

Goal:
To provide experience at graduated levels of responsibility in the clinical arena, building skills in the assessment of patients, the development of treatment plans, competency in operative skills and appropriate management of surgical patients. A detailed description of the goals and objectives for each service by level are attached in (Appendix E – Goals and Objectives 2006/2007).

Residents gain clinical experience while rotating on a variety of services in the Department of Surgery including general and trauma, surgical oncology, cardiothoracic, urology, vascular, transplant, plastics, neurosurgery, pediatric surgery, orthopaedics, burn surgery, critical care. In addition, General Surgery residents gain experience in the private practice setting through an educational affiliation agreement with Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. These experiences include the assessment, care and management of patients in the clinic, operating room and hospital wards. Below is a general template of the annual block schedule.

Assessment:
Residents are evaluated by faculty and nursing staff following each rotation. Additionally, patient evaluations and peer evaluations are solicited periodically throughout the year. Residents are also given the opportunity to provide feedback on faculty members and the services during the academic year.

Operative Experience

Residents are expected to prepare for their operative experience through reading and studying. They must be acquainted with their patients and prepared to answer questions regarding their care.
