The Department of Surgery
received over 700 applications for
our general surgery residency training program
in 2012.
Applications are reviewed and selected by
the Program Director. Approximately 75
will interview for five (5) Categorical positions.
In addition, there are six (6) Non-designated Preliminary positions. The number of designated preliminary positions in the match varies to accommodate positions in the surgical subspecialties such as Plastic Surgery and Urology.
Applicants who match in Urology at the VCU Medical Center and wish to complete their general surgery internship at the VCU Medical Center are required to rank General Surgery at VCU in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for the preliminary year.
Interview Schedule for Categorical and Preliminary Applicants
Interviews
are scheduled on a first-come, first-serve basis. They are held during these 3 weekend sessions:
- November
2-3, 2012
- December 7-8, 2012
- January 4-5, 2013
Interview Process for Categorical and Preliminary Applicants
Occasionally, we receive
requests to schedule private interviews. Since all faculty in the Department of
Surgery play a role in forming the rank
list, it is an advantage to the applicant
to attend one of the three scheduled interview dates, (see above). Therefore, we do not arrange interviews on days outside of our scheduled dates. Applicants begin the
interview process on Friday with presentations by our faculty and by attending
a tour of the VCU Medical Center. On Friday evening, the department hosts
a reception where applicants
have the opportunity to talk informally
with our residents and faculty.
Interviews are held on Saturday morning while applicants enjoy a continental breakfast with residents and faculty. Interviews are conducted by three faculty members as well as the program director or chairman. An informal luncheon will
be held to provide candidates with an
opportunity to meet again with faculty and
current residents. The faculty meet after each interview session to
rank candidates interviewed. After the
three weekend interview sessions, faculty
compile the final rank list for submission
to the match.
