Ruth TrivelpieceSince 1976, the Center for Facial Reconstruction has been achieving excellent results with a team of experienced specialists, an interdisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment, and a commitment to providing comprehensive care for even the most complex craniofacial conditions.

Discovering that a child has a craniofacial anomaly, a condition in which the child's skull or face has not formed properly, can be stressful for any parent. Whether the child was born with the condition or acquired it as a result of disease or trauma, such a diagnosis can raise many questions. The following explains how the Center for Facial Reconstruction at the VCU Medical Center can help, providing comprehensive care for every child as well as support and guidance for parents. The Center for Facial Reconstruction can help you understand craniofacial abnormalities. And, more importantly, our team can help your child receive effective and comprehensive treatment.

The specialists at the Center are skilled at treating a wide variety of craniofacial conditions. Some of those commonly seen at the Center include:

The Center also sees patients with many other craniofacial conditions, but because these conditions are rare, they may not fit into a 'category' of diagnosis.

Offering Support for Parents
There is a support group in Richmond (and elsewhere) for parents with a child who has a cleft lip or cleft palate, and a support network had been established for exchanging ideas and offering help, the participants in these groups help each other face may of the challenges of having a child with a craniofacial condition. Contact the Clinic Coordinator at the Center for more information about these groups.

Parents bringing a child to the Center should bring:

  • A referral from the child's primary care physician
  • Insurance information
  • Complete names and addresses of the child's health care providers
